Document Tracking and the Deadline COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY - SIPA Admissions Blog My staff and I know the stress that surrounds the submission of an admission application.     This entry is meant to help applicants understand how our application system works as well as how we update our system and communicate with you.   I hope this will help to ease any concerns you might have during this busy time.  This entry is somewhat long, but if you read it thoroughly it should answer any questions or concerns you might have. First let me state that 100% of the application process can be completed on the Web â€" we do not require that a single document be mailed to our office to consider a candidate for admission.   The only documents we might expect to receive by mail are academic transcripts and letters of recommendation.   We encourage applicants to upload copies of transcripts to our system, the personal statement and two résumés are uploaded, and applicants self report test scores in Part 2 of the application. If letters of recommendation or transcripts are sent by mail, the important thing is the date the documents are received, not the date documents are tracked into the online system.   Our deadline is January 5th so documents sent by mail should be received by this date.   However, it can take 10-15 business days from the time a document is received via mail for us to manually track it in our system. So do not panic if you have submitted Part 2 and/or mailed something to our office and it does not show as received on January 6th.   It actually may take us up until late January to track all documents sent to our office or uploaded to the system.   Rest assured that we will work with applicants if we believe a good faith effort was made to supply a necessary document by our deadline date.   There is no need to send a document a second time to us unless we reach out to you first (we will do so by email if necessary).   Sending documents a second time typically leads to delays. Also note that if you do plan on mailing your transcripts, you should upload a single sheet with your name and short statement noting the names of the transcripts that are being mailed (in Part 2 where you are asked to upload your transcripts). The following are details related to the two parts of the application, along with notes on each required document or piece of information we require and how receipt is tracked. Part 1 Part 1 of the application is quite simple and only requires an applicant to fill in personal information and answer basic questions along with entering the names of three recommenders, along with whether an applicant expects them to submit their letters online or via mail. If an applicant indicates that a letter writer initially was going to submit a letter online but then later decides to submit by mail, we do not need to be notified.   When we open the letter we will match it to the online record. If a recommender submits a letter via our online system, the applicant will receive an email from the system informing him/her that the letter has been uploaded and the status will change to “Submitted.”   If we receive the letter via mail, we will have to manually update the applicant record.   In this case, no email will be sent to the applicant, rather the applicant can log in and check the status on the main page. The receipt of letters of recommendation should not impact an applicant submitting other documents.   Applicants are encouraged to submit all of the documents and information they are responsible for as soon as possible.   As letters are received they will be tracked into the system and the status updated. The final step in Part 1 is payment of the $85 application fee.   After paying the fee and submitting Part 1, applicants receive a confirmation email and Part 2 will become visible on the application site. Part 2 Below are descriptions of all of the documents/information we require in Part 2 of the application.   Please read carefully as we receive many questions about the receipt and tracking of documents in our system. Transcripts Transcripts can be uploaded to the application site or mailed to our office.   We do not require official transcripts to consider an applicant for admission and uploading unofficial copies is perfectly acceptable. Do note that all coursework must show the grade received and the grading scale notes should be included with the transcript. Do note that if transcripts are uploaded to the site they will not automatically be tracked as received.   Rather the status will read as “Not Received.”   Why does this happen?   The reason is that we must print the application and manually check to see if the transcripts are legible and complete.   Thus it can take some time for us to manually change the status to “Received â€" Not Official” which is acceptable for admission consideration.   Note that any transcripts uploaded to our system will be tracked as “Received â€" Not Official.”   If an offer of admission is made and an applicant accepts the offer, we would then require an official copy to be sent via mail by June 15th. If an applicant does send official transcripts via mail and they are received by the deadline, they will be tracked as “Received â€" Official” in the system.   Again, the tracking process can take time so we appreciate your patience. Test Scores All applicants should self report applicable test scores (GRE, GMAT, TOEFL, IELTS) in Part 2 of the application.   We do not require official test reports to consider an applicant for admission. While we do encourage applicants to list our test code when taking exams, we do not pay the testing organizations to mail paper reports to our office, rather the score reports are downloaded into a centralized Columbia University computer system.   However, we do not match application records to this centralized system until after admission decisions have been made. Because of this, every applicant must enter self reported scores in Part 2 of the application.   If self reported scores are not entered, it will slow down our processing of the file.   While we understand that some applicants have requested that official test reports be sent to our office, if you have left the self reported test score section blank, you should log back in and self report your scores before the January 5th deadline. Just like with transcripts, test scores that are self reported in Part 2 will not automatically be tracked as received.   Upon submission of Part 2 the status will read as “Not Received.”   Again, the reason is that we must print the application and manually check to see if the scores have been entered and printed out correctly.   Thus it can take some time for us to manually change the status to “Received â€" Not Official” which is acceptable for admission consideration. If an offer of admission is made, we will then match your admission record to the centralized system the university uses for test score reporting.   If an applicant entered our code we will match the official scores to the application record.   If we run the matching process and the scores are not present, we will notify the applicant that he or she should contact the testing service to ensure that the official scores are sent to us no later than June 15th.   Once official scores are received they would be tracked as “Received â€" Official.” Personal Statement and the Two Required Résumé /CV Documents When you upload these documents to the system they will automatically track as “Received â€" Official.”   We will still manually review the application and will notify the applicant if there is an issue when these documents print, but this happens so rarely that we are comfortable with tracking as “Received â€" Official” upon submission of Part 2 of the application.   The status change is automated, but it can take a day for the system to update so do not panic if they are not tracked as “Received â€" Official” right after submission. Forwarding the File to the Admissions Committee Once we have manually checked a file to ensure that all of the required documents have been submitted and are legible, we will send an email to you stating that the application has been forwarded to the Admissions Committee.   Please realize this may take up until late January.   Again, if there is an issue, we will reach out to applicants via the email listed in the application.   When a file is completed has no impact on the admission decision (as long as all of the documents were received by the deadline). This war divided a nation and the outcome set the stage for how our nation still operates to this day. The issues between the North and the South, or as they become known back in 1861, The Union and The Confederate States of America, were not something that could have been negotiated. The war lasted four years and ended with victory for the North. I would have to say that I agree with Historians that believe the Civil War was inevitable. The type of conflict between the North and South was ultimately about money and issues like that most likely can never be solved peacefully and without bloodshed. As you can see, the combination of these critical issues was the perfect recipe for a war. The South was depending on slavery to sustain their economy and provide growth. The North however, was more focused on equality and the fact that every man should be equal. We also see how the Southerners way of life was a direct contradiction of the constitution. If slaves were treated fairly and more as employees than property, I doubt this would even be an issue. However, it is the disgusting way in which the South and other slaveholders treated their slaves that made this an inhumane practice. It has been documented the way slave owners would savagely beat their slaves for no reason. There were some rules on the treatment of slaves but most didn’t follow them and there was no regulation. A perfect example of this comes to us from the records of Bennet H. Barrow. He was a slave owner in Louisiana that kept records of how many times he punished, or beat, slaves during a twenty-three- month period. Mr. Barrow owned 129 slaves and his records totaled 160 whippings. Th is means on average a slave was whipped, beaten or punished every four and a half days. Heroes come in many shapes and sizes. Contrary to popular belief heroes nowadays are just regular people with the same everyday problems that we have to endure. In the movies Broken Blossoms and Mississippi Masala there are heroes. In this paper I will describe the heroes in each movie and then compare the heroes. In the movie Broken Blossoms a abused woman played by Lillian Gish is put under the torture of ritual beating by her father. A Chinese man named Yellow Man, for his skin color is a kind and emotional man who falls in love with Lillian. I would say that Yellow Man is the hero in this movie because he shows Lillian how men are supposed to treat ladies unlike her father whom she deserts shortly after Yellow Man dies. In the movie Mississippi Masala, a black man and an Indian woman fall in love and attempt to stay together despite her parent's pleas to keep them apart. In this movie I would say that Nina and Demetrius are the heroes of this movie because they overcome their parents prejudices and defy them. In summation, I think that these two examples of heroes are not the most interesting but they are valid. Upon further review of my writing I think that the revelation I made while doing this paper is that you do not need to be totally extraordinary to be a hero. If you stick to you4r guns and have faith what you believe you too can be a hero.

In 1511, Balboa founded a colony, the first European settlement in South America – the town of Santa Maria de la Antigua del Darien. Balboa married the daughter of Careta, the local Indian chief. Soon after, in 1513, he sailed with hundreds of Spaniards and Indians across the Gulf of Uraba to the Darien Peninsula. Balboa headed an overland expedition west through very dense rainforests. Along the way they fought many local Indians and destroyed one Indian village, killing hundreds of Indians. Balboa was the first European to see the eastern part of the Pacific Ocean. Balboa and his men then traveled to the ocean and claimed it and all the land that touched it for Spain. The building of the Panama Canal came to light during the 1530’s. As they began to transport their riches back to the Spanish homeland, they were always interested in more efficient routes. It was suggested to Spanish Ruler Charles V that Panama might serve as an ideal place to construct a water passage joining the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. This would considerably cut the time it took to otherwise sail around the southern edge of South America. But wars back home put the idea on hold. In 1845 French company called the Compagnie de Panama wanted a railroad built by Colombia across Isthmus and administer it for 99 years. However in 1848 they couldn’t pay for it and lost their rights regarding the railroad. In 1848 the California gold rush occurred. This alone caused heavy traffic across the Isthmus of Panama. Later that year in December, U. S Company, the Panama railroad company negotiated a new contract with Bogota, Colombia to build the railroad across the Isthmus in 6 years. Part of the contract said that the trip would be guaranteed in less than 12 hours. The railroad was built and completed the journey in 4 ? hours. But Matthew Fontaine Maury, leading U. S. government scientist wrote to congress that the railroad Isthmus of Panama will lead to the construction of a ship canal between the two oceans, for a railroad can’t do the business which commerce will require it. Railroad was expensive it cost $250 in gold to ride the 47 miles. It cost 10-15 cents a pound to carry a passenger’s baggage. Express freight and merchandise was charged $1. 80 per cubic foot. Railroad Company made more than $7 million. This was too expensive for normal people and Maury’s words of 1849 came true as men from around the world began to arrive to build the Panama Canal. The first country to try and build the canal was France. Ferdinand de Lesseps, who supervised the Suez Canal, was interested in building the Panama Canal. He joined several French businessmen to form a private company with an impressive name: the Societe Civile Internationale du Canal Interuceanique du Darien. The societe sent Lucien Napoleon- Bon parte Wyse, grandnephew of the 1st French emperor, Napoleon Bon parte to Panama in early November 1876, to survey the site for a canal and, more important, to secure the permission of Colombia for such a project. Colombian government and Wyse had an agreement. That for an initial payment of nearly $200,000 as well as yearly rental fee, societe was granted permission to build and administer a canal for 99 year lease. Colombia gave societe a belt of land 200 meter wide across the entire width of Panama. However at the end of 99 years the canal and land would be returned to Colombia. In 1873 U. S. had conducted surveys of a potential route across Panama, but had rejected it. Wyes never did surveys, and decided to use the notes of U. S. surveys instead. After that he left Panama for home to report to Lesseps. The French plan was simple a channel across the Isthmus at sea level. They would follow a route that ran close to the existing Panama railroad. They planned to use the railroad to transport supplies and haul away the excavated dirt. Once the excavation had reached sea level the canal itself would be dug another 27 ? feet deep, and 72 feet deep at its bottom. They planned to complete the canal in 12 years. However the idea of sea level canal was impossible to achieve. Charges river valley, through which and canal would have to go through stood at an altitude of 80-100 feet above sea level. Nobody including de Lesseps ignored this problem and said it was not serious. However the French never finished the sea level canal. 1000’s of men died of malaria, yellow fever and other diseases. Eventually in 1889 the French court also declared the French canal company was bankrupt. In 1903 Panama declared its independence from Colombia and wins it with the help of U.  S. Soon the Hay- Bunau – Varilla treaty was signed which gave U. S. the right to build a canal through Panama. At this time President Roosevelt was in charge. Roosevelt wanted to build the canal to increase America’s navy power, and it made the trip from the east coast to the west coast of the U. S. much shorter than the route taken around the tip of South America. 1904, the Americans’ first year in Panama, mirrored the French disaster. The chief engineer, John Findlay Wallace, neglected to organize the effort or to develop an action plan. The food was putrid, the living conditions abysmal. Political red tape put a stranglehold on appropriations. Disease struck, and three out of four Americans booked passage home. Engineer Wallace soon followed. The Americans had poured $128 million into the swamps of Panama, to very little effect. Wallace’s replacement was John Stevens. Stevens had built the Great Northern Railroad across the Pacific Northwest. In rough territory from Canada to Mexico, he had proven his tenacity. And his new plan of action would ultimately save the canal. Stevens began work not by digging, but by cleaning. Thanks to the work of WILLIAM GORGAS, the threats of yellow fever and malaria were greatly diminished. Then on February 12, 1907, a dispirited Chief Engineer Stevens resigned, and Goethals took over as the chief engineer. Colonel George Washington Goethals, an Army engineer with experience building lock-type canals, assumed the Chief Engineer’s post. Demanding and rigidly organized, Goethals quickly picked up where Stevens left off. America had to face a couple of problems. First they had to dig at the Culebra Cut, where 100,000,000 cubic yards of earth and rock would have to be removed. The workers there made ten cents an hour — moved as much as 200 trainloads of spoil a day. When mudslides filled the Cut repeatedly, Goethals simply ordered it dug out again. There were accidents of all sorts, lost equipment, and deaths, but there was progress. The engineering problems were enormous. Because the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans are at different elevations, a series of three sets of water-filled chambers, called locks, that raise and lower ships from one level to the next, had to be excavated and constructed.

But I have one want which I have never been yet to satisfy...I have no friend, Margaret: when I am glowing with the enthusiasm of success, there will be none to participate my joy; if I am assailed by disappointment, no one will endeavour to sustain me in dejection...I desire the company of a man who could sympathize with me, whose eyes would reply to mine.-- (page 18). This similarity between man and monster becomes clearer as the novel progresses. It suggests that the two may not be as different as they seem. Framing helps the reader find the interrelation among the characters and come up with observations that would be concealed in other circumstances. The framing technique also makes the story more compelling because Walton will eventually see the monster at the end of the novel. The story about the creature would just be a story, if not for Waltons person al encounter with Frankenstein and his creation.
